E.C.H.O.E.S. - Edmonton went to Weyburn on October 11-12 2008
Weyburn Mental Hospital / Souris Valley Hospital is a MASSIVE, abandoned hospital in southern Saskatchewan. We had the pleasure of NOT touring the facility on the Thanksgiving weekend in 2008. We were very fortunate however to meet up with a group of fine people who DID enter the facility and even went so far as to photograph the entire location (600 + photos) and even shot some video. They said that their tour took over 4 1/2 hours and they walked somewhere close to 10 - 12 KM. Some of the history of the place is a little unbearable, and other parts are flat out sickening. Of course there are good stories, but we don't get to hear all that many good stories nowadays. Later on, after this current project is complete, perhaps I / we will go on to write up a short history and include some of the pictures that are not being used in this project. Here are a few hundred images. Most have anomalies and the image associated with them are "control shots". That is, images that immediately follow the image which capture an anomaly. Some types of anomaly can be explained by their position in the control shot. Others confirm their unique-ness by NOT being in the control shot at all. Through the course of the images, a number of questions will occur to you. Unfortunately, the answers to most of them, will be... Unknown. Perhaps one day, with groups like ours maintaining constant vigilance, we will have an answer to some of these questions. |

The Feature AttractionThis short video was shot in the room below. Please notice that there is a "Wiggler" behind the door, and it dissapears in the pic after it. It appears to have shown back up in the video. This magnificent dinosaur had a lot more to it than will ever meet the eye. We can sit and "tell ghost stories" all we want, but it will never replace the true horrors of this place. Electro-Convulsive Therapy. Cold Wet Wrap Therapy. Lysergic Acid Diethylamide (LSD) Therapy. The Snake Pit, perhaps the worst place in the facility. Solitary confinement. The guide related how misbehaving residents would be locked in and checked on rarely. A fire hose was used through the open door to clean and control the residents. The 2 inch by 8 inch slot in the door was a terrible reminder of how close we all are to our own sanity.

In the old days, so very very far behind us, (we WISH!!!) we all lived in a world where a man could decide one day that he was tired of his wife. He could simply pack her in the car and take her to Weyburn and tell the doctors that she was "Crazy" and leave her there. If nobody ever came to claim her, she was trapped there. Of course, if she was "relatively sane" she might get to go on the work detail. Many women were sent to work on the local work farm. Later, they would be returned pregnant. Then after the babies were born, and disappeared, the women would be returned to the work farm. Some, mysteriously, returned to Weyburn pregnant yet again.

Can you imagine a building with the square footage of West Edmonton Mall where the beds are less than a foot apart? The thousands of people, the desperation, the lonliness, the suffering. How could we possibly put ourselves in that sad, scary darkness? There is no way. For the 3 seconds that I was closed in one of the "Snake Pit" rooms, my heart rate began to climb, my ears became so sensitive to the silence that I wanted to scream and the noises of the people right outside the door seemed to fade until it seemed to be a thousand miles away. If I had heard a key turn in the lock, I think I would have freaked out. Nah... I KNOW I would have freaked out.
